COMPETITION RULES

1. The competition is open to pianists of all nationalities, studying or resident in the British Isles and born on or after 9th October 1979.

2. All competitors must submit with their entries a copy of their birth certificate or passport as evidence of date of birth.

3. Previous First Prize winners and anyone who has studied with any member of the Jury twelve months prior to the competition are not eligible to enter.

4. A maximum of 20 competitors will be selected for the Competition. Eight competitors will be selected for the Recital Stage and three for the Concerto Final.

5. The Competition reserves the right to refuse the entry of any competitor without giving a reason.

6. Competitors' entries should be supported by:

a. recent written testimonials from two referees, one of whom should be the competitor's current piano teacher, and
b. a recent unedited CD recording of professional standard, approximately 20 to 25 minutes, containing your performance of three contrasting works or movements.

The CD should be authenticated by your teacher. The authentication must be written on the disc, not as a separate document. No CDs will be returned

POOR QUALITY RECORDINGS AND UNAUTHENTICATED CDs WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

7. CLOSING DATE FOR ENTRIES IS 1ST MAY 2009. CHANGES TO PROGRAMME
WILL NOT BE PERMITTED AFTER 10TH AUGUST 2009.

8. Competitors must play all pieces from memory. An exception will be made for complex modern century music.

9. Competitors must supply copies of all music performed in the edition used. One copy is required for standard works and two for less familiar modern music.

10. It is left to the competitors discretion whether or not repeats are played.

11. The jury may stop competitors who exceed the time limit.

12. All prizes are awarded at the discretion of the Jury.

13. The decision of the jury at all stages of the competition will be final.

14. The order of playing for all stages will be decided by the committee and jury.

15. The three competitors going forward to the Finals Concert will be judged on their performances at both the Recital Stage and the Finals Concert.

16. The Competition reserves the right to replace any member of the Jury who is unable to attend.


GENERAL INFORMATION

1. The entry fee is £50. Cheques should be made payable to Dudley International Piano Competition.

2. All stages are open to the public

3. Practice facilities will be provided for all competitors.

4. A Yamaha CF111S Concert Grand Piano, courtesy of Yamaha UK, will be used for all stages of the Competition.

5. Competitors are responsible for their own travel arrangements. Overnight accommodation on Saturday 10th October will be provided for competitors reaching the Recital Stage and on Saturday 17th October for Final Stage competitors. Accommodation for Friday 9th October will also be offered to competitors with early Saturday morning performance times.

6. Additional application forms can be obtained from the Secretary or from the website.

7. All enquiries should be addressed to the Secretary.

8. Dudley International Piano Competition is open to members for a biennial fee of £5. Benefits include reduced price tickets for the Preliminary and Recital stages of the competition, priority booking for the Final and annual newsletter. Membership forms can be obtained from the secretary.

 

THE COMPETITION

The Competition is divided into three stages:

1. The Preliminary Stage will be held at Dudley College of Technology, The Broadway, Dudley, West Midlands on Saturday 10th October 2009, commencing at 9.30am

Each competitor will be allowed a maximum of 20 minutes for the performance of three contrasting works from each of the following categories:

a) either a Bach Prelude and Fugue or a Scarlatti Sonata
b) any one movement from a Classical Sonata by Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven
c) either a study by Chopin, Liszt, Scriabin, Debussy or Rachmaninov
or one significant work from the Romantic or 20th /21st century repertoire.

A maximum of eight competitors will go forward to the Recital Stage.

2. The Recital Stage will be held at Dudley College on Sunday 11th October 2009, commencing at 10am.

Competitors will be allowed a maximum of 45 minutes for a professionally presented concert programme of three different works including one major work.

Competitors will be allowed to incorporate one work from the Preliminary Stage.

The John Ireland Trust is generously donating a £1000 prize to the best performance of one of the following works included by a competitor in this stage:

Ballade (NB not Ballade of London Nights)
Rhapsody
Decorations (complete)
London Pieces (complete)
Sonatina
Sonata
Sarnia (complete)

Please note that the inclusion of a work by Ireland is not compulsory.

Three competitors will go forward to the Final Stage


3. The Finals Concert will be held in Dudley Concert Hall on Sunday 18th October 2009, commencing at 7pm.

Competitors must prepare two concertos, one from each of the following groups.
Competitors will be notified by the Jury immediately after the Recital Stage which of the two concertos each competitor will perform in the Finals Concert with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Michael Seal.
